Lidia Elizabeth Moreno

Lidia Elizabeth (Garza) Moreno passed away peacefully in the presence of her two children on the morning of December 16, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on September 19, 1952 in Corpus Christi, Texas to loving parents Valentina Salazar Garza and Gilbert Arredondo Garza.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gilbert Abel “Butch” Garza Jr., her niece Lydia Cristina “Kika” Heckard, and brother-in-law Aubrey Lee Purswell. Lidia is survived by her son Jimmy Lucas Moreno and wife Cherise, her daughter Ruth Elizabeth Moreno, her granddaughters and greatest source of pride and joy, Sofia Isabella Moreno, and Olivia Grace Moreno; Sisters Linda Esther Purswell, Laura Enedelia Alvarado (Jesus), Lucila Elvira Enderle (William), Lamar Evangelina Baca (Hector), and brother Juan Kasiro Garza (Lisa) and many cherished nieces and nephews.

A move to Austin for her then husband’s academic career, Lidia opted to work part-time from home during her children’s formative years. Lidia was always inquisitive, loved reading and was a strong proponent of higher education, so as soon as both of her children were in school, she returned to full-time employment and began to take courses through the local community college. After relocating to San Antonio for work and higher education, in 1989 Lidia found out she had been born with only one kidney, and it was failing. Given her treatment options she chose an experimental path proposed by her nephrologist. The treatment took a physical toll, but it put her kidney disease into remission for several decades and helped her avoid dialysis. As a lifelong learner, Lidia was committed to completing her degree. In the years that followed her treatment, she continued working and taking classes until 2001 when she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies.

With her children thriving and her degree in hand, she found her professional home in the Edgewood Independent School District as an elementary school teacher. She loved the tight knit community, formed many friendships with her coworkers and made a positive impact in the lives of countless students during her tenure.

Lidia was always a loving and devoted mother but found a whole new type of love when she met her grandbabies. She was present for the delivery of each of her two granddaughters in 2005 and 2009. They were inseparable, brought her endless joy and were spoiled by their beloved “Noni”. Lidia retired from teaching in the fall of 2019 and immediately embraced her much-deserved leisure time. To friends and family, Lidia was known for her loving and loyal nature, her excellent cooking/baking, her quick wit, her love of travel as well as her commitment to community involvement. Despite many adversities and health issues throughout her life, Lidia was a strong and resilient woman. She is and will continue to be loved and missed by all who had the privilege to know and love her.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Lidia on July 9th at 10 a.m. at Sunset North Funeral Home 910 North Loop 1604 East San Antonio, Texas 78232 and the service will also be available to join via livestream. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable contribution in Lidia’s name to The University of California San Francisco’s Bioartificial Kidney Project, the American Kidney Fund, the American Diabetes Association, or the charity of your choice.
