Leroy Jonas entered Eternal Rest on February 27, 2011 at home at the age of 87. Jonas is a WWII veteran having served in the Navy from 1942-1946. His tour was both in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He was proud of the fact that his ship (U.S.S.WEBER) was the first American ship to enter Nagasaki, Japan (site of the 2nd Atomic Bomb drop) on conclusion of the war. The U.S.S. Weber sent it’s fleet of four landing crafts up the river to liberate the many thousands of Prisoner of War veterans.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Edgar Jonas; 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Yvonne of 58 years of marriage; daughter, Jennifer and her daughter, Reily. He is also survived by his son Roger & life partner, Tracey Rinehart of Dallas, TX; 2 brothers, George of San Antonio, TX and Leonard of Houston, TX; 1 sister, Lucille of Houston, TX; numerous nieces, nephews; special friends, Debra Wyrick & Robin Roe.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church, 504 Ave. E, San Antonio, TX 78215 followed by a reception. Interment will follow at 2pm at San Fernando #3 Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.
