Leo A. Martinez Jr., born on January 17, 1936, went to be with our Lord on March 17, 2020, at the age of 84. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Leo Martinez Jr. and Angelina Garza Martinez, and Daniel James Martinez. Leo is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Fidelia Perez Martinez; Children—Evelyn Martinez, David Martinez and wife Cecilia, Linda de la Fuente, Leo A. Martinez IV and wife Doris, Dalia Rodriguez and husband Raul, and 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Leo graduated from Burbank H.S. in 1954, where he played football and loved sports. He was a big fan of the University of Texas Longhorns. He attended St. Mary’s University (2 years) then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was proud that the military taught him his career in electronics. He worked a civil service career at Kelly AFB for 35 years, getting several awards for his suggestions and improvements in the workplace. He attained an Associate’s degree in Science from St. Philip’s College by attending night school, and worked towards his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas, but he quit to meet the needs of his family and community.
He coordinated volunteers, fundraisers, and the structure of the first Gateway Little League where he coached and made improvements to the program every year. Gateway played other leagues in the city and always won the championship trophy. He also started a girl’s softball league for his girls. After that he started umpiring little league games all over San Antonio. After retirement, he continued to work at ATTI for 10 years, retiring to be the caregiver for his father.
Later, he joined the Willie Cortez Senior Center where he loved to dance, play volleyball, and garden. He was always friendly with everyone and he loved to make people smile.
Visitation held on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at Trevino Funeral Home at 226 Cupples Rd., San Antonio, Texas from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Rosary at 6:00 p.m. and Eulogy at 7:00 p.m. The procession departs at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2020, to St. Vincent De Paul for 10:00 a.m. service. Interment at San Fernando Cemetery II.
The visitation will be limited due to the Declaration set by the city, county, and state officials.
