John Frederick Gilbert was born on June 20, 1926 in Panama, Republic de Panama to John F. & Susan Hall Gilbert. John passed away on October 15, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas. He attended grade school through high school in Balboa Canal Zone, and upon graduation, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Far East and was honorably discharged in August 1946.
He was employed by the U.S. Air Force until he joined the Canal Zone Police Force in October 1950. He served on the Force until his retirement as Assistant District Police Commander with the rank of Captain, in June 1976.
At that time, he and his family moved to San Antonio, TX. After arriving in San Antonio he was employed by Wackenhut Security Company for several years. He and Jackie were very involved in their parish Catholic Church and the Alamo Area Square and Round Dance Association. They co-chaired the committee which hosted the national Square and Round Dance convention in San Antonio. His love outside of Jackie, and his children was bowling. He bowled 2 perfect games.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Dennis A. Gilbert, Bill Gilbert, sister Stella I. Buonviri, and his loving wife of 59 years Jacqueline “Jackie” C. Gilbert. He is survived by his sisters Mildred Patton, Mary Urey and his children, John W. Gilbert (Sheila), Steve A. Gilbert (Cathie), Robert “Bo” A. Gilbert (Andrea), Michael A. Gilbert (Lesa), and Katie E. Reddout (Richard), his grandchildren Michael Paul Gilbert, Mary “Mimi” Fisher(Felix), J. Charley Gilbert, Tallon Reddout, , Megan E. Bontempo, Tricia N. Bontempo, Kyrie E. Gilbert, Kaitlynn B. Gilbert, Christopher R. Gilbert, Madison J. Gilbert, , Emilie Gilbert, Cassidy Reddout, and great grandchildren, Kila O. Fisher, William F. Fisher, Kyndell H. Gilbert, Neveah L. Gilbert, Jade Smith, Christian T. Smith , Nathan Gilbert and Ben C. Koons.
SERVICES
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 from 6:00pm-9:00pm, with a Rosary at 7:00pm at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 12:30pm at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, 6907 Kitchener, San Antonio, TX 78240. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
