Joe Ponce Velasquez

Joe P. Velasquez born on June 19, 1950 in Floresville TX went to be with the Lord on December 25, 2016 at the age of 66 years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Senaida P. Velasquez; son, Joey P. Velasquez Jr; father and mother, Miguel G. and Isabel P. Velasquez. He is survived by his loving children: daughter, Laura Jean Velasquez and son and daughter-in-law, Sonny P. and Stacie Marie Velasquez; loving grandchildren: Alina Destini, Sierra Love, Joelin Devon, Serenity Faith, and Rocky Sonny; brother, Miguel P. Velasquez; sister, Lupe V. Castillo and numerous nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Joe graduated from Floresville High School in May 1972. Shortly after, he moved to San Antonio where he met and married his beloved wife of 40 years, Senaida Piedra, in San Antonio, TX on November 18, 1972. On August 13, 1973, they welcomed their first son, Joey P. Velasquez Jr. Joe purchased a humble home at 706 Clovis for his wife and newborn son shortly after; this would be the home where Joe and Senaida would welcome their second child, Laura Jean Velasquez, born May 31, and son, Sonny Velasquez, born November 2. The humble home on Clovis is where Joe’s heart resided; he worked endlessly to provide for his family to make that house a home. Clovis Street holds fond memories for not only the Velasquez family, but for numerous friends and relatives who considered it a ‘second home’. Joe always knew he was a lucky man, especially when he started welcoming his grandchildren into his life, always shedding them with love and affection.

Joe worked for 45 years of his life. He had a very strong work ethic and often complained about the younger generation not taking work as serious. Joe was a foreman at multiple bakeries throughout his life, companies he worked for included Sweeney, Lone Star Bakery, Colonial Cake Co, and Flowers Bakeries. He also worked for H-E-B warehouse as a Sanitation lead where he was the first among his peers to earn H-E-B’s Most Valuable Partner Award. Joe took pride in his work and the awards he earned along the way, he never missed a day unless absolutely necessary and he was loved and respected among his co-workers.

Joe was also very blunt and outspoken, and although he was firm, he was fair. He was far from perfect and he told it like it was. Joe’s family recalls a way he always described himself, he often said although he was small; he was built like dynamite because dynamite came in small packages.

A few ways Joe enjoyed life were through beer drinking, wearing his cowboy hat and boots, combing his hair like Elvis with the little curl, listening to Ramon Ayala while singing and rocking in his rocking chair, dancing with his wife and sister-in-law, Hilda Longoria, spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, and he also enjoyed watching his 2 favorite sports team, the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys. Joe was also a great mechanic; he could often be found outside on Clovis Street working on his cars. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family and he loved being the life of the party.

Although Joe will be greatly missed, his children find comfort in knowing he will be reunited with his beloved wife and son, his parents, and lost brothers and sisters. The family thanks God for his life and the blessing of the time spent with him.

Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Trevino Funeral Home, 2525 Palo Alto Rd in the funeral home chapel. A procession will depart from the funeral home on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 9:30 am for a 10:00 am mass of Christian Burial St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Interment will follow in San Jose Burial Park.
