Janet Marie Byrne, age 54, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 13, 2019 in San Antonio, TX. Born in Syracuse, New York, she was the daughter of John and Helen Kluge. She graduated from SUNY-Potsdam and lived in Syracuse for some time before moving to Virginia Beach and then San Antonio, a city she loved for the sunny weather, friendly people, and laidback environment.
To all who knew or interacted with her, Janet was known for being caring, understanding, and gentle. She had a contagious laugh that made everyone around her smile. Although incredibly humble and modest, she was nevertheless the brightest light in a room—making everyone feel welcome, special, and at ease. People were naturally drawn to her because they knew that they would be supported and comforted in her presence. She was always ready to help others in need and prioritized others’ needs before her own. Everything that she did was in some way intended for the benefit of others.
A fiercely dedicated mother, she ensured that her daughter had the best childhood and education possible. She adored doting on her dogs, taking them on walks to McAllister Park every evening and trips to the pet store on the weekends. Janet also volunteered regularly at the Animal Defense League and Homeward Bound Animal Rescue. In addition to her passion for animal rescue, she was a faithful parishioner of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. Her family will remember her love for taking care of others. She was the epitome of ‘treating one’s neighbor as oneself’ and was truly an angel among us.
Janet is survived by her daughter, Kaileigh Byrne of South Carolina, her sisters Karol Hughes of Oklahoma, Joan Kurland of Virginia, Susan Rivers of Delaware, and her beloved fur-children Trina and Grayson. She is also survived by her nieces Elizabeth Kurland, Eleanor Kurland, Jennifer Monroe, and nephews Alexander Kurland, Nicholas Kurland, and Chris Prioletti.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Animal Defense League San Antonio in her honor: https://adltexas.org/donation/
A remembrance mass will be held at St. Mark the Evangelist Church. The date is yet to be determined, but will be posted in the comment area below.
“O Master, let me not seek as much.
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love,
for it is in giving that one receives,
it is in self-forgetting that one finds,
it is in pardoning that one is pardoned,
it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life.”
