He also spent some time in Arkansas as a child where he worked on their farm with hogs, chickens, and bailed hay, or went swimming in a cold spring fed creek, where he also caught frogs that his mother would fry for them to eat. He always went to church with his family, and sat by his mom who had a beautiful alto voice. He was active in sports and band, winning many ribbons and medals especially in football, track and basketball. He became a school teacher after graduating from Sul Ross University in 1956. He married Carolyn Kral from La Pryor in 1957, and they had one daughter, Debbie in 1958. He then taught in San Antonio, primarily in the Harlandale District until he retired in 1990. He began substituting, and continued doing so in the Northside District until 2024. He served 68 years in education.
He also liked to preach for the Church of Christ and filled in for ministers that were ill or on vacation and continued that, off and on, for 64 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and making many things out of wood. He has made things for his home, family, school and friends that are too numerous to name. These memories will last for generations to come. He enjoyed helping others with projects and was always asking if someone needed help.
