Irma Maria Guerra

Irma Maria Guerra, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother went home to be with Jesus on July 27, 2023 after a sudden illness at the age of 71. Irma is survived by her husband Salvador, daughters Jennifer and Erika, sons-in-law Roy and Brandon, and her grandchildren Noah, Evelyn, Katelyn, and Eliana.

Irma was born on March 1, 1952, in Brownsville, Texas to Rodolfo and Anita Perez, and was the eldest of 6 siblings. She attended Homer Hanna High School and worked at the Courthouse in Brownsville shortly after high school. Irma had a career that involved service to others. She served as the Director of the Laredo Children’s Museum, was an advocate at the Battered Women’s Shelter in Brownsville, Texas, and worked for UT System at UT Brownsville and UT Health San Antonio, where she retired. Her work in higher education as an administrative professional was with various grant-funded projects including Project Mujer, TRIO Programs, and various grant-funded disease study trials.

She married Salvador Guerra Jr. in 1997, and they were happily married for 26 years. Her greatest work was as mother to Jennifer and Erika, and grandmother to Noah, Evelyn, Katelyn and Eliana. She always had words of wisdom to share, or tips on how to cook or bake for the grandkids. Gift giving was a love language of hers, and she often would get little things she saw at the store, “just because” for her husband, daughters, sons-in-law, and grandkids. She was a seamstress and master craftsperson, having created many Christmas ornaments, stockings, journals, and knickknacks for people she loved and cared about.

Irma loved the beach, specifically South Padre Island, where she would watch the family fish and swim. Annual family vacations to “the island” happened throughout the 80s and 90s that included her parents, siblings, and their families. She treasured those times. A fantastic cook, her famous Thanksgiving stuffing was a family favorite, and was a recipe passed down from her mom. We will certainly miss that stuffing this year.

Irma was a strong woman of faith. She read her Bible daily and enjoyed listening to sermons and worship music with her husband. If you were ever in need, Irma was always there with a caring ear, a word of Scripture and prayer. We rejoice that she is with her Savior Jesus.
