Herbert Leonard Coleman was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on December 29, 1918. His parents were Mabel O. Nordby Coleman and Henry M. Coleman. He passed away in San Antonio, Texas, on January 13, 2021, at the age of 102.
Herbert served in the Nebraska National Guard prior to World War II. After high school he obtained a job with the Omaha National Bank. Soon after the US entered World War II, Herbert gained a commission through the Infantry Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and ultimately became an officer in the United States Army. He spent the next two years on the faculty of the Infantry School. He was then sent to Europe with the infantry and led a machine gun platoon near St. Lô, France. While fighting near Brest, France, he was wounded by shell fragments and spent three months in a hospital. For his injuries, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Because of his wounds, he was not qualified to return to the front and was assigned a staff job in the headquarters of the European Theater of Operations in France and lived in Paris where he made friends with French families and left Europe with the rank of captain. After the war ended, he found that his wounds disqualified him from remaining in the army. He was able to attend college at Creighton University where he obtained his degree in pharmacy. After joining the army during the Korean conflict and receiving the Bronze Star, Herbert remained in the army and retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He also worked for Shearson Hammill stock brokers and later practiced pharmacy.
In 1947 he married Myrna Dunton of Smith Center, Kansas. In 2001, he married Opal Grace Wynne of San Antonio.
Mr. Coleman is preceded in death by his parents and two siblings as well as his wife of 49 years, Myrna Dunton, and his wife of 20 years, Opal Grace Wynne.
He is survived by his three children, Nancy Hierholzer of Fredericksburg, his son David Coleman of San Antonio, and his son Roger Coleman and his wife, Jean, of Round Rock. He is also survived by four grandsons, Brandon Coleman, of Marietta, Georgia, and Jeff Coleman and his wife, Michele, of Bulverde; Jonathan Hierholzer, of Kerrville, and Evan Hierholzer and his wife, Erika, of Austin.
