Gary passed away peacefully in his sleep after a second battle with cancer. He was born in Abilene, TX to Bobby James Pratt and Rudine Havens Pratt. He was blessed with 4 grandparents, and 1 great-grandfather and 3 great grandmothers.
The family moved to Tripoli, Libya, No. Africa. He attended 1st and 2nd grade at the Oil Company School. He developed his love for music, art, and ancient cultures and architecture. In 1967, the family was evacuated by the USA Air Force to Europe, during the 6-day war between Egypt and Israel. We then visited friends in Italy and family in Sweden on trips to the USA.
He attended schools in Monday, TX. and Hermitage PA. before moving to San Antonio. Here he attended Maverick Elem, Whittier Middle, and Jefferson High school. He took piano lessons and enjoyed singing in the choir. In 77-78 they made all-district choir.
He chose Abilene Christian University where he majored in art education with a minor in in music, Bible and interior design. He took piano, was in Choralaires and A Cappella and had his art show. He returned to San Antonio to teach art classes at McCollum High school for 18 years. He also had a class that worked with theatre, building sets and working closely with U.I.L completion and summer musicals.
Gary is survived by his mother, Rudine Vickery and step-father Royce B. Vickery, 3 step-sisters, Patricia Smith Carnes, Linda Vickery Dunkeson and Brenda Vickery Marsh and nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Pratt and step-father, Thomas A. Smith and his grandparents.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 24th at 11am at San Pedro Church of Christ, 311 Jackson Keller Rd., San Antonio TX with Bro. Charles Johanson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cherokee Home for Children, PO Box 295, Cherokee TX, 76832-9989 or Sunny Glen Children’s Home, PO Box 1373, San Benito TX. 78586-9902.
