Evelyn Wyrick Sievers

Evelyn W. Sievers, 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Thursday morning, January 18th, 2018 after a lengthy illness battling dementia and a broken hip. Evelyn was born in San Antonio on July 21, 1919 to Lt. Col. Guy and Adelaide (Booth) Wyrick. She grew up on the grounds of Fort Sam Houston, where her father was responsible for managing the construction of the Brooke Army Hospital and overseeing its operation throughout WW2. Evelyn married Anthony Jerome (Jerry) Sievers in 1940, having their first child, Anita, in 1941, and their second child, William, in 1947. They lived in Alamo Heights until 1955 when Jerry was transferred to Ft. Worth, until 1964, followed by a three-year transfer to Lexington, Kentucky. They returned to San Antonio in 1967, Where Evelyn and Jerry lived in Hollywood Park until Jerry’s Death in 1970. Evelyn was a dedicated mother and homemaker. As a hands-on gardener, she maintained a beautiful home, taking great pride in its appearance and upkeep. She actively researched her family tree for many years and was proud of her Cherokee heritage through her father. Well into her 90’s, Evelyn was an active and vibrant self-sufficient resident of San Antonio, witnessing virtually all of San Antonio’s 20th-century history. With a passion for the history of the city and the role her family played, she was always eager to share her accounts with friends, journalist and younger residents of the city. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Guy Booth Wyrick, and her husband Jerry. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Anita and David Aldrich of Galveston, Texas, and her son William Guy Sievers of Natick, Massachusetts. Mrs. Sievers will be buried with her husband at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. The family gives special thanks to the compassionate caregivers, the kind support of the Amedisys Hospice Team and the many friends who our mother through this difficult passage. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Meals on Wheels of San Antonio or the Northeast Senior Services Association. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
