Edward Blake

Edward Blake was born on July, 4, 1936 in Eagle Pass, Texas and moved to San Antonio, Texas with his family in 1950. He is the son of Forrest Lee and Amparo Fuentes Blake. He was the second of seven children: Forrest Blake Jr., Bill Blake, Moranda Blake, Mary Lee Carney and Debbie Martinez. Ed was raised and attended school in San Antonio and at the age of seventeen joined the Marine Corps.

Initially, he was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas and would return home during leave to visit family and friends. It was during one of these visits that his cousin Sal Gomez set him up on a blind date with Blanca Davila in December of 1956. They were married on July 6, 1957, and moved on military orders for the next 20 years beginning their journey at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina followed by orders to Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Irvine California and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, Ca. During his 21 year career Ed proudly served his country in the US/Hawaii, Japan and Vietnam.

Ed retired honorably from the Marine Corps in 1973 as a Gunnery Sergeant. The family of five returned to San Antonio, Texas to begin civilian life. He began his second career in 1974 at the University of Texas, at San Antonio shortly thereafter, continuing his professional specialty of Supply and Fulfilment for the University as the Store Supervisor for the Physical Plant Department, He and Blanca both remained employed at UTSA until retiring together in 1998.

Upon his retirement Ed got to enjoy more of his favorite activities; he loved fishing, dancing, bowling, golfing with his brother Charlie, working out at the gym, dining out and being active in his church and faith, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, a brother in the Knights of Columbus and eventually as Grand Knight for the organization. His love of family and friends always put him front and center at his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, church functions, graduations, birthdays and social gatherings. He was a wonderful example of kindness, caring and selflessness as a husband, father, grandfather and friend to everyone he knew or met. The world is a better place because of his contributions.

Ed leaves behind his beloved wife of sixty-six years Blanca, his three children; daughters Cecilia Blake Grammar (Robert Grammar), Maria Blake Servantes and son Edward Anthony Blake (Rhonda Blake). His five grandchildren; Avery Anzilitto, Emily Bailey, Devon Lucas, Ian Lucas and Emma Blake, and seven great grandchildren. He has now reunited with his siblings; Forrest Blake Jr., Moranda Blake and Charlie Blake.

A visitation for Edward will be held Wednesday, July 5, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232. The rosary will begin at 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at Sunset North Funeral Home, with a committal service to follow from 1:15 PM to 1:45 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Shelter #2, 1520 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio, TX 78234.
