Dolores M. Valdez was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 22, 2024 at the age of 82. She was born on August 7, 1941, in San Antonio to Louis E. Cortes and Petra “Patty” Perez Cortes. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. Dolores was a graduate of Little Flower Catholic School. On February 9, 1963, she married the love of her life, Antonio J. “Tony” Valdez. Dolores and Tony were married for 56 years. Dolores worked for VIA Metropolitan Transit and retired after 22 years of service. Dolores was a great cook and baker and created elaborate wedding cakes for her family and friends. She especially loved teaching her children and grandchildren how to make tamales, traditional family recipes and homemade cookies and candy. She enjoyed displaying her awesome talent with counted cross stitch, crocheting and quilting. Dolores was a member of the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild and always looked forward to spending time with her quilting buddies at quilting bees. She would travel to quilt retreats, such as the Compass Centre in Mount Calm, Texas, Paducah and the International Quilt Show in Houston, Texas. Dolores was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church for over 55 years where she served on the Alter Society and Bereavement Committee. Dolores loved her family and enjoyed doing for them before herself. Her family remembers her devoted faith, positive and uplifting spirit, love for her dog, Bella, and unconditional love she had for her children and grandchildren.
Dolores is preceded in death by her husband, Antonio J. “Tony” Valdez, parents, Louis E. Cortes and Petra Perez Cortes, and her brother, John Albert Cortes. Dolores is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Marie Valdez; son, Mark Anthony Valdez and his wife Molly; grandchildren, Isaiah Mark Valdez, Anthony Victor Valdez, Daisy Marie Valdez and Brianna Nicole Valdez; brother, Louis Anthony Cortes and his wife Tina; sister, Martha E. McKenzie, and her husband, Roger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, Texas 78238, on Monday, May 6, 2024, from 6 p.m. 9 p.m. The rosary will start at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 4603 Manitou Drive, San Antonio, Texas, 78228 at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
