David was born with special needs into a caring family who saw to his welfare for all his 85 years. His parents gave him a loving home for 70 years, and after they passed, he moved from Illinois to San Antonio under the guardianship of his sister Miriam.
David delighted in artwork, loved dancing, attending church services, and never wanted to miss a day working at his sheltered workshop in Batavia, IL. He had a clear engineering mindset and enjoyed watching construction projects. He loved cleaning, and even vacuumed part of his assisted living facility. His innocent personality made him a favorite among caregivers, medical personnel, and anyone who had the wisdom to see past his limitations. He taught us all about compassion and humility.
David was preceded in death by his parents Col (dec) Lee Emerson Montgomery and Cecilia (nee Ottenhoff) Montgomery. He is survived by his sisters, Miriam (Col. Ret. Jay) Higgs, Rosemary (Lt. Col. Ret. Frederick Paris) Greydanus; nephews, Stephen (Elizabeth Simon) Higgs. and Peter (Joselyn Smith) Greydanus; and nieces Elizabeth (David Kato) Higgs, and Elizabeth (John DeLoach) Greydanus.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the many caregivers over the years who ensured a beautiful life for David. Among those are the staff of the ARC of San Antonio, Jill (Trevino) Piazzi, MA, CMC, of Gray Matters, his caregivers at Gemstone Memory Care Oakwell, Carol Bertsch, Certified Elder Law Attorney, and Captain (Dr.) Ekaterina Tangog, D.O., of the San Antonio Military Medical Center.
David’s commitment ceremony will take place on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 9:45 a.m., at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach, Shelter 4, San Antonio, Texas. Chaplain (Ret.) Rev. Dr. John Kaiser will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the ARC of San Antonio, https://arc-sa.org/donate/, and the Valley Sheltered Workshop of Batavia, IL, https://www.pledge.to/empower-sustain-support-14c-resources-for-the-disabled-community, in David’s memory.
