Col. Robert O. Lynch

Col. Robert O. Lynch (Bob) was born in San Antonio, TX on October 27th, 1925, son of the late Col. Charles Peter Lynch and Isadore Taylor Lynch. He began his fascinating army life as one of four “Army Brats” moving from post to post worldwide and eventually to the US Military Academy. He graduated from The US Military Academy at West Point as a 2nd Lt. with a BS Degree in Military Science on June 7th 1949 and married Adell Mulkey that same afternoon. He received a regular Army Commission in the Infantry Branch and served honorably until he retired in 1975. Bob was selected to further his education at Tulane University where he received his Masters Degree in Nuclear Physics in 1962. Upon completion, he was assigned to the Secretary of Defense Division of Nuclear Affairs at the Pentagon. Bob and Adell had six children, Peter, Robert, Kathleen, Nancy, Michael and Patrick. Bob served a tour of duty with the 1st Calvary Division in the Korean War in 1950/51 and received a Purple Heart after being wounded in action. In 1960 while stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Bob graduated from Command and General Staff College. He served his first tour of duty in Vietnam in 1966. He graduated from the Army War College in Carlisle, PA in 1969 and was selected to remain there as a member of the staff and faculty where he taught various subjects in Military strategy. In 1972 he returned to Vietnam for his 2nd tour of Duty. Bob’s final assignment was Deputy Post Commander of Fort Sam Houston until he retired from the Army in 1975. After moving back and forth between Texas and Pennsylvania Bob, Adell and family settled in San Antonio. After retiring from the military, Bob spent several years working with a builder of advanced energy efficient homes in the Texas hill country. As an early advocate for energy conservation, he drove diesel cars, installed solar panels in his home and established a strict family recycling program in the late 1960’s. His favorite holidays were Christmas and Halloween. He decorated his homes in style and the annual parties are still reminisced today! Bob had a passion for sport cars and always managed to have a sporty convertible. He is preceded in death by his wife Adell of 60 years; his Brothers Capt. Charles P. Lynch, Jr. KIA WWII, and James M. Lynch, and survived by his brother Col. Ret. Hugh J. Lynch of Alexandria, VA, all six of his children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 05, 2011 at the Army Residence Community, 7400 Crestway Drive. Funeral Mass will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 06, 2011 at the Army Residence Community.
