Carolyn Curtis Cather Swan, beloved wife, gifted companion, loving friend and wise advisor to Marcus Swan passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 1st, 2017, her daughter Ava and her husband at her side.
She is survived by her husband Dr. J. Marcus A. Swan, her daughter Ava Maria Tierney, her brother Richard Douglas Cather, her sister Janis Lee Penick and her twin sister Patricia Lynn Poer and Susan Scott (Scottie) Cather and their children.
Daughter of US Army Colonel Leo Wilbur Cather and Clara Belle Cather, Carolyn obtained her BA in Art History, class of 1955, while attending Duke University, NC. that she followed with a career as an artist and illustrator of 25 adult and children’s books including: Girl on a Broomstick, Woman of Courage, A Cook’s Tour of Rome and San Francisco.
Carolyn was a docent at the San Antonio Museum of Art for 23 years and before that at the Witte Museum in San Antonio. She became a docent Emeritus with SAMA in 2016.
Since 1977 she has been a practicing Buddhist in the Sakya tradition. She was widely travelled and her first teacher was the Venerable Dezhung Rinpoche and later His Holiness the Sakya Trizin. She also received teachings from Her Eminence Jetsun Kushok Rinpoche and also from Geshe Drakpa Gelek and Lama Passang Gelek at Chodon House in San Antonio.
Much respected and beloved; she lives on!
