While serving, he earned the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship ribbon and the Airforce Good Conduct Medal. Upon returning from Japan, Carl served with the 832nd Combat Support Group at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico.

Carl lived in Lakewood, Colorado for nearly 30 years and retired to Rockport, Texas in 1994.
Carl was an avid outdoorsman. While living in Colorado, he and his friends would pack up the Orange Wonder and hunt in the great depths of the Rocky Mountains; often returning home with deer or elk.
He loved camping and fishing. Carl immensely enjoyed rifle and bowhunting. His children have fond memories of fishing for rainbow trout and attending the Bowhunters Jamboree.
When Carl moved to Rockport, he purchased a Carolina Skiff right away and began honing his skills as a saltwater fisherman. He was a member of the Rockport Yacht Club.
He was a devout collector of many things, most notably vintage firearms, as well as Abu fishing reels, elephant toe knives, wrist watches and lures.
Carl was most known for his charm. He had a clever and witty sense of humor and could win just about anyone over in a matter of minutes. Carl was very outspoken and had deep pride for America and the older ways of life.
He could fix anything; he rebuilt a ten-speed bike runover, a garage door backed into, a front Hyundai fender and parking light and much more.
The best lessons he taught his children included don’t be afraid to speak up, have strong work ethic, always take notes, and save your money.
