Betty was a graduate of Eldorado High School in 1964 and proudly received her teaching degree, in Elementary Education, in 1968. She married the love of her life, Raymond Darrell Barnes that same year and then subsequently had two daughters: Kristin and Taryn (Teri).
Betty was a proud military spouse supporting her husband’s Army career for over 20 years. The family was stationed in various locations worldwide including Hawaii, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, and multiple tours in Germany.
Betty loved children and was passionate about education which was a large part of why she chose to become a teacher. Helping young people discover a passion for learning was one of her true joys in life. Her love of teaching did not conclude with her NEISD retirement from Wilshire Elementary in San Antonio, she continued to read and mentor children at her local elementary school, Woodstone Elementary, and participated in many years of teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) through her church. Not one to ever be idle she also obtained her Real Estate license and then ultimately assisted her husband in opening and running a free-standing Hyperbaric clinic in San Antonio catering to the Special Needs population.
Faith was also a very important aspect of Betty’s life, she proudly attended and supported Northern Hills United Methodist church for the final 40 years of her life.
Betty was an inspiration to all who knew her and was loved and admired by many. The impact of Betty’s life will be felt for years to come and will be carried forward by all the lives she touched. She was an amazing mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family and people she cared about. She was the true definition of an angel who has now earned her wings and will be tremendously missed.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Darrell Barnes, mother Viola Pet Caldwell (nee Felty) and her father James Arthur Caldwell.
She is survived by her daughters: Kristin Barnes (Jeffery DeWalt), and Taryn (Teri) Barnes. She also leaves four grandchildren to cherish her memory: Andrew, Brandon, Joseph, and Megan.
A visitation is scheduled for June 20th from 6-8 pm at Sunset Funeral Home located at 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio Texas. The Funeral Service is scheduled for June 21st, 1pm and will also be held at Sunset Funeral Home located at 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio Texas. Committal service will take place subsequently, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
