Wow, I worked with Big Al at the State, just hearing the News made me sad. Thanks for all your support Al Barrera.

What a giant of a man, an inspiring teacher and an awesome friend. I am so happy to have gotten to work with him for twelve years. He taught me so many amazing skills. 

Thank you Mr. B, you have given me some everlasting knowledge. 

My heart is truly saddened by his passing. I extend my love to Rosalinda and her family.

Tio Beto is one of my major life influences! I remember his quiet advice reminding me:“…and don’t forget… you’re always a Barrera.”
Be at peace. Bless you for being a large part of my life!

My sympathy to Linda, Ronnie and Danny for your great loss. I will always remember Adalberto as a quiet and respectful man but with a quick sense of humor. You were a good friend of my brother Gilbert. May you rest in peace.

To my dear Boss, Al, who was a friend and mentor. How fortunate we were to have a leader who made work feel like home. Al had a calming presence that made us feel like all would be well even if he knew a storm was coming. I will always remember his sayings like
"This too shall pass," which gave me hope that tomorrow would be a better day. 
"Don't  stress, it'll only give you wrinkles," which helped me to put things into perspective.
"Be nice," which was his only reprimand to me when I got too zealot at work because he was wise to understand that my heart was in the right place.
One of my last message to him was on Veterans Day.  I told him that he served his country and community with honor.
"Fair Winds and Following Seas, Al."

Mr. Barrera was a colleague, but more important, he was a friend.


Al was one of a kind.  He was a wonderful mentor to me and many others.  He said the first job was to protect and he strived for this with everything he did.  He worked to protect our country, his coworkers, his family, those he served and so many others. He taught many others this wisdom as well and so much more.  He also could be counted upon to give advice and to be there to help whenever I asked. I appreciated his sense of humor, his love for his family and hearing of his travels.   

I am sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing him with us.

I was so honored to be with Tio and Tia on this trip. 🇺🇸

My Tio Beto served in the United States Navy between 1969-1975. He went to Boot Camp in Orlando, Florida and trained in San Diego, California at Balboa Navel Hospital. He was also deployed on a Navy hospital ship during Vietnam.
We are so grateful for his service.🇺🇸

My condolences to the Barrera family.  I am so sorry to hear of Al’s passing. Al was one of a kind.  We worked together at Richmond State School many years ago.  It was an absolute pleasure.  Al was a great mentor.  Our interactions later, when I became a state surveyor, equally  good.  .  .always gracious and willing to express  how proud he was of my success.  He will certainly be missed.

My condolences to the family. Al is a good man. I worked with Al in the late ‘70s at the Corpus Christi State School Community Services Division. Al was the Social Worker. His intelligence, genuine heart for clients and families, and great sense of humor made him a one-of-a-kind man I could never forget. Just being in his presence was a learning experience. I recall many fun times with Al, Robert G., and L.D. G.. 
When I heard he’d taken the Superintendent position at Richmond State School, I knew the clients, family and employees would be beneficiaries of his leadership. 
I am saddened at his passing but will carry his memory always and offer prayers for his family.

With deep sadness today I learned of your passing. You will be greatly missed. You were awesome director at RSSLC. I always enjoy the small talk when you pass by switchboard and always with your cow boots on.  I remember the day I went to your office to apologies for stopping you and your wife at the front gate. I was so scared that it was last day of work but instead you congratulate me for passing the test since that day you and Gabiel Herrera would made fun of me. My condolences to Rosalinda, Danny, and Veronica. He was one of a kind. A gentleman, a friend who would always be there to listen. I met him in 1975 when we were both working for the Corpus Christi State School. We got along so well that I asked him and Rosalinda to baptize my daughter, Valerie. We consider ourselves lucky for knowing him. May he rest in peace.

It is with sadness and disbelief that I just learned of your passing, as my director for 15 years at RSSLC, you were an amazing human being, considerate, compassionate and understanding!  May your return to God the father be joyful and painless! to your surviving family, I wish luck and comfort in the pain. You are missed!

I'm so sorry to hear of Al's passing on from this life. He was a friend and a mentor to me. I often reached out to him for help and he always came through. He was very well-known and loved in the state supported living centers and he touched many of the lives of staff, residents, and their families. My prayers go out to all who knew and loved him and especially to his family. He was and will always be remembered as an amazing person with a heart for people and a pure soul.

Always dressing up and getting everyone in a good mood at the family Christmas parties, making sure everyone got together at least once a year. Love you so much grandpa and wish we had one last big Christmas gathering together 😔
