She was born in Shamrock, Texas on March 18th 1941 to Cecil and Lois Clay. She graduated from Wheeler High School and married Robert Hegdal of Borger, Texas. Shirley began her real-estate career in Lubbock in 1980. She sold homes and did the decorating for Venture Homes with her husband Robert. They moved their business to Tampa, Florida and then to San Antonio, Texas in 1994. She was a top sales leader for several years with C-21. After retiring in 2004, they moved to San Angelo to be closer to family and grandchildren. Shirley married JD Cook in 2012 after Robert had passed from a battle with cancer. She loved watching her grandkids play baseball and football. She enjoyed traveling, snow skiing, water skiing and golf.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, her husband of 50 years Robert and her son Clay Hegdal. She is survived by her husband, JD Cook; her daughter, Jill Butler and husband Mark of Lubbock; her grandchildren, Ashley Esqueda and her husband Jeremy of Lubbock; Amanda Butler of Lubbock; Brett Butler and wife Devan of Seminole; Zack Butler and wife Autumn of Lubbock; Jake Butler of Lubbock; Logan Hegdal of Lubbock; Skylie Hegdal of Fort Collins, Colorado; Ryan Hegdal and Jessica Hegdal of Lubbock; her great grandchildren; Beckett and Peyton Butler of Seminole and Evelyn Butler of Lubbock and Behran Banks Esqueda of Lubbock. She is also survived her step children, Priscilla McCollum (Dick Earhart) and John David Cook as well as her granddaughter, Lauren McCollum.
Shirley fought a battle of breast cancer but lost the battle due to complications that arose. She was loved by her family and will be dearly missed.
A Celebration of Life service for Shirley will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, August 20, 2023, at Grace Presbyterian Chapel in San Angelo.
