He accepted Jesus Christ at the First Baptist Church in Cameron, Texas at the age of 12. Rex graduated from C. H. Joe High School in 1938. He graduated from Texas Tech University with high honors in 1941 before joining the army in WWII. After his military service, Rex went on to receive his Masters Degree from The University of Texas in Austin.
Rex taught school in Cameron, Texas for two years before accepting an elementary school principalship in Sonora, Texas. In 1958, he became Superintendent there.
In 1967, Rex became Assistant Superintendent in San Angelo where he served for 23 years. He retired in 1990 with 47 years experience in the public schools of Texas.
Rex loved the teaching field because he felt that the education and training of our youth was a high calling. He often said the nation’s future lay in the hearts and minds of its youth.
Rex encouraged hundreds of students in his long career and devoted many years in the development of the nation's youth.
He was past president of the Sonora Lions Club, a member of the Congress of the Parents and Teachers of Texas. He was an A student at Texas Tech and the University of Texas in Austin. He taught an adult class in Sunday School in Sonora and San Angelo for many years.
Rex said that although the memory of his life will soon be forgotten his memory will live on forever in the lives of his students, family and future generations.
He is survived by his wife Edith Lowe, his sons Rex M. Lowe and Carl R. Lowe and his daughter Terry Lowe Hill. Also his grandsons Jason Lowe and Tyler Lowe and a granddaughter Madison Lowe and great grandchildren. He also had a very loving relationship with his son-in-law, Tom Hill and his children and grandchildren. He also had a great love for all of his nephews and nieces. He helped shape all
these lives and will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 10:00AM at the First Baptist Church of San Angelo. Rex will be laid to rest in Sonora, Texas at a later time.
