June Doggett left this world to be with her Lord and Savior in the early hours of March 24, 2022, succumbing to complications from post-COVID-related neurologic problems and dementia. June suffered a series of seizures and strokes beginning in mid-November, and received loving care from her friend and physician, Dr. Ty Hughston and New Haven Assisted Living along with Concho Hearts Hospice. June was a long-time resident of San Angelo, Fort Worth, Abilene, and Water Valley, Texas. June was a former Vestry member and active member at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
Barbara June was born October 28, 1935, at St. John’s Hospital in San Angelo and was raised with her older brother, Dr. Percy R. “Bud” Turner at the family ranch near Water Valley. Her parents were Percy William Turner and Gertrude Rau Turner. June spent her youth engaged in reading and tending to her ranch animals as did most ranch girls of that era. Naturally, she learned to drive at an early age and chauffeured her father on his trips across west Texas to inspect horses for registration as American Quarter Horses. She attended Water Valley Schools and skipped the 2nd and 6th grades. She later drove herself, commuting daily, to San Angelo to attend her last 2 years of high school graduating in the Class of ’52, Central High School. At age 16, she went to Columbia, Missouri and attended Stephens College. Unfortunately, she was stricken with a neurological illness and returned home during her freshman year. She was infirmed at the San Angelo Hospital Polio ward for several months. She later resumed studies and obtained her associate degree from San Angelo College (now ASU), thanks to loving assistance from classmates.
She moved to Abilene, Texas in 1955 and served as bookkeeper and executive secretary to the owner of a prominent drilling company. During that time, she met a young Marine aviator who was founder of an oilfield logging and service company, Glenn Doggett. Glenn called on his customer’s secretary numerous times and their courtship was short and sweet. On December 29, 1956, in front of her parents’ fireplace at the Water Valley ranch, she and Glenn exchanged marriage vows. During their first years of marriage, June managed books for Glenn’s new service company, Go Services, Inc. in Abilene. In February of 1958, they welcomed their one and only child, Scott Turner Doggett.
In 1969, pursuant to Glenn’s promotion, the family moved to Fort Worth. There, her servant’s heart glowed with years of volunteering for the Junior League, at Trinity Episcopal Church and serving as a sport team and class mom at Trinity Valley School. There were few years where the family had Scott as the only child in the house. June made sure that The Doggett House was an “Open House” for numerous guests, friends, and relatives.
One of June’s greatest joys was building her dream home on the family ranch at Water Valley and moving there in 1980. As Glenn commuted to Abilene, and DFW, he was gone a considerable amount chasing his oil business near and far. June was very content reading her books and interacting with her parents, Bud, Helen and the rest of the ranch family. She also loved her animals: several poodles, three Rhodesian Ridgebacks, barn cats, peacocks, and her Quarter Horses.
In her last years, she thoroughly enjoyed developing a relationship with her grandson, Turner, as he completed his undergraduate studies at Angelo State University. She was always a big fan and supporter of her son Scott in their cutting horse development and competitions.
June was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; her parents, Percy and Gertrude Turner; and, her cousin R.A. “Hap” Canning.
