Juan, known to friends and family as “John” was born in Eldorado, Texas to Abram Rangel and Medarda Pena. John was born to life on September 3, 1935 and entered into eternal life on September 8, 2021 at the age of 86.
Dad, also known by his Lipan Apache name… “White Buffalo Standing”, was preceded in death by his parents Abram and Medarda; brothers: Pedro Rangel, Frank “Pancho” Santellano and Ruben Santellano. John is survived by his beloved soulmate… Irene “White Eagle Feather” and sister Lydia Aguirre.
He is also survived by his sons: Juan (John) “John Wolf” and wife Bonnie; Fernando “Lone Wolf” and wife Alma; Raynaldo (Ray) “Wii-Champii” and Martha Mirelez “Summer Breeze”; Arturo (Art) “Black Bear” and wife Lupe “White Bear”; Michael (Mike) “White Hawk” and Kim; Gabriel (Gabe) “White Eagle” and wife Janie “Spirit In The Wind”; and his only precious daughter, Graciela (Grace) “Indian Heart” and husband Raul (Rod) “Power Horse”.
White Buffalo Standing is also survived by thirty-five (35) grandchildren, sixty-eight (68) great-grandchildren, and eight (8) great-great-grandchildren.
John married his beautiful wife Irene, Dec 26, 1953, at San Jose Mission, then located on the corner of 12th St. and Randolph St. in San Angelo Tx. From then on, the couple began their work in the church and united as one served God with their whole mind, body, strength, and soul. John and Irene lived in Fort Stockton and in 1969, without a job waiting for him, having only trust in God who called John to follow Him. John told his family, “Pack up, we are moving back to San Angelo where I left my God.”
They loved to serve, John and Irene and were Extra- Ordinary Eucharistic Ministers for the sick and home bound, teachers of R.C.I.A. and C.C.D. classes. They were anointed and commissioned by Bishop Michael Pfeiffer to heal the sick and bless homes and families. Together they were part of team that assisted in helping develop the charismatic prayer groups and ministry at St. Joseph and elsewhere in the Diocese of San Angelo. John was the coordinator for Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors for 12 years, and was one of the founding members of the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus, for the Fr. Albrecht Council 12798. John also attended the very first English Cursillo in the world which was held at San Jose Mission on Nov 9-12, 1961.
In December of 1993 John Rangel and family Received the apostolic blessing from St. Pope John Paul II, as Family of the Year.
From the original call so many years ago and then for the rest of his life, John trusted completely in the God of Love and Mercy. On September 8th, 2021, John “White Buffalo Standing” Rangel went to be in the presence of His God, whom he served so faithfully.
