John attended Lake View high school until August of 1964 when he enlisted in the Army to finish high school. John reenlisted in the Army until retiring in 1984 as Sergeant First Class, earning a Bronze Star, two Army Commendation Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After retiring from the Army, John returned to San Angelo and worked at Shannon Hospital as a nurse's aide, and as a janitor at Baptist Memorial Hospital. John later worked for the Concho Valley Community Supervision and Corrections Department, during which time he served Habitat for Humanity and supervised those who performed community service from 1999 until 2003.
John married the love of his life, Kwang Ho Pak, in San Angelo on November 16, 1985. John and Pak were very involved with the Korean Methodist Church of Abilene. They loved their Pekingese dogs dearly. John was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 457, where John maintained the grounds and provided flags for the Concho Valley Vietnam Veterans Memorial while he was able to do so.
John was an avid collector of guns and knives and will always be remembered for his generosity and compassion for animals.
John is preceded in death by his father, John William Tyler, mother, Dorothy Jo Foster, wife, Kwang Ho, and grand-nephew Bryan Burgin.
John is survived by his sister, Gina (Richard) Fickling, brother, Jerry (Lynda) Tyler, nephews, Ashton (Wendy) Brunner and Kevin Tyler, nieces, Lynda "Cricket" (Kevin) Frakes and Deandra (Scott) Vancil, special friend Rosie Montano, and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
The family will be available for visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26th at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held graveside at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 27th at Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a memorial donation to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 457.
