World War II Veteran, Corporal, Gilberto Roque Torres, 96, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2022. Torres was born in Melvin, Texas on September 1, 1925, to Father, Lazaro Bermudes Torres and Mother, Lorenza Roque Torres.
At the age of 18, Torres was drafted into the U.S. Army and inducted on July 14, 1944. He served with honor in the 2nd platoon of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division also known as the “Thunderbolt” Division.
On June 18, 1944, approximately 2 weeks after D-Day, the “Thunderbolt” division landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. After approximately seven weeks, Torres was severely wounded in action and was transferred to an evacuation hospital. Torres was honorably discharged on March 1, 1947. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Bronze European- African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal and, Combat Infantry Badge.
Corporal, Gilberto Torres was humble and modest about his heroism, valor, and bravery. He had a benevolent heart for his family whom he genuinely cherished and spent the rest of his life devoted to being an outstanding family man. Torres lived a full and satisfying life and will be greatly missed by all who experienced his humorous personality, unwavering love, and his
warm, enjoyable presence. He will forever be in our hearts and memorialized with utmost respect and honor
Corporal, Torres is survived by his wife, Rosa Torres; son Gil and wife, Martha Torres; daughter Sandra and husband Joaquin Leon; daughter Maricela and husband Adam Fernandez; son Guillermo and wife Barbara Torres; daughter Terry and husband Vicente Munoz; daughter Leticia and husband Jaime Lujan; nineteen grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Monday, Febuary 14, 2022 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Johnson’s Funeral Home, 435 W. Beauregard Ave., San Angelo, TX 76903. Funeral Services will be held at Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday February 15, 2022, at 2 pm. Burial will follow at Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, 4989 FM Hwy 1223. Following the burial, there will be a gathering at Johnson’s Funeral Home, 435 W. Beauregard Ave., San Angelo, TX 76903.
