David Lee Neel, 84, of San Angelo passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021. He was born on July 15, 1936 in Odessa, Texas to Finis Eunice Neel and Merle Allman Neel. David attended Baird High School and graduated in the class of 1954. He later went on to obtain his Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemistry and Physics from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. He then completed his Masters of Education Degree from McMurray University, also in Abilene. David began his 37-year career in Education working as a teacher for several small school districts including Three Way ISD, Cross Plains ISD, Pep ISD, and Water Valley ISD. He taught the last 30 years with San Angelo ISD at Edison Junior High School teaching science and later starting the computer science program.
David married Lynda Dianna Rosson on February 14, 1961 in Snyder, Texas and had two children. David was a proud member of Texas State Teachers Association and served one term as the state president. He had a passion for teaching and helping others and went on after his retirement to be the regional coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) for many years. He loved doing income taxes for family and friends as well. David will be remembered for his hobbies of horse racing and computers. He enjoyed world traveling with Lynda, camping all across the United States, fishing, golfing, and especially time with his extended family and grandchildren. He loved spending summers in Ruidoso, NM.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 21, 2021 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Noble Officiating. David was preceded in death by his parents, and in-laws R.J. and Dorothy Rosson of Snyder. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lynda of San Angelo; son, Lee Neel and wife, Brenda of Sabinal, TX; daughter, Wendy Oates and husband, Mark of Woodward, OK; grandchildren, Chad (Lindsey) Oates of Sioux Falls, SD; Garrett (Kaylee) Oates, Woodward, OK; Brenlee Neel of San Angelo, TX; Bradlee Neel of Big Lake, TX; Breelee Neel of Boerne, TX. He is also survived by four great grandchildren Carter Jenness; Parker, Gracelynn, and Magnolia Oates all of Sioux Falls, SD. David is also survived by several brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nephews, and nieces.
