Bruce Fisher

Bruce H. Fisher, 89, passed away at home Thursday, March 28th, 2013. Bruce was born to Henry and Mayme Fisher on December 6, 1923 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Upon graduation from high school, he volunteered to serve in the US Air Force and received his commission in June, 1944. During World War II he served as a pilot of B-24s. While stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base, he met and married the love of his life, Charlotte Meadows. He described his marriage “as one made in heaven, a real love affair” that lasted 67 years.

Bruce and Charlotte first lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan where Bruce was an agent for Aetna Insurance Co. They moved to San Angelo in 1948 when Bruce entered into business with Frank Meadows, Sr. They purchased the old Broom & Hunter Agency which became Meadows-Fisher Insurance. Bruce retired from the insurance business in 1999. He made many lifelong friends.

Bruce was a fine Christian man of faith, integrity, honesty and loyalty to his family and friends. He was committed to serving both his church and his community. He was an Elder and Trustee of 1st Presbyterian Church for 65 years. He was President of Downtown Kiwanis Club, with 33 years of perfect attendance. He was President of San Angelo Country Club, Tom Green County Chairman for the Republican Party and served as President of SAMFA. He also served as Trustee of Camp Sol Mayer and devoted many years to the Concho Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America.

His sport was day sailing and racing sail boats. He was a world class sailor having sailed as a young boy in Michigan, winning many racing trophies. In 1966, San Angelo Chamber of Commerce credited Bruce with bringing sailing to West Texas. He served on the Lake Nasworthy board and helped form the Lake Nasworthy Association. Bruce and his friends made many sailing trips on the high seas.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte Meadows Fisher of San Angelo; his sister Nancy Erhardt and her three children Michael Erhardt, Kathy E. Davis and Jeanne E. Schultz of California. He is also survived by his nephew Chris Meadows and wife Gina and nieces Robin Walker and Jennifer Folsom, all of San Angelo, Texas.

Bruce’s family wants to give special thanks to his care-givers Frances Gonzales, Josie Olivas and Sara Martinez who gave him such special care and treatment. We also want to thank the compassionate care given by Odyssey Hospice in Bruce’s final days.

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Bruce Fisher will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church, San Angelo. Services are under the direction of Johnson’s Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts or the Concho Valley Boy Scouts of America, as these were special to Bruce, or the charity of your choice.
