Alton M. Green

On Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, our beloved Alton Green went to be with our Lord in heaven. He was born in Palava, Texas, on July 8, 1928. After graduating from Roscoe High School in 1947, he attended and graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1951, with a degree in education. While attending Abilene Christian University on a football scholarship, he was co-captain of ACU's 1950 team, the only undefeated team in the nation that year. Later in life, he was inducted to ACU's Sports Hall of Fame and recognized as a member of their "Team of the Century." In April 1950, he met ACU student June Waid. On Dec. 29, 1951, they were married in El Paso, Texas. While living in El Paso, they were gifted with two children, Beverly Jeanne and William Bradley. During their time in El Paso, Alton served as an officer on the El Paso police force. Moving to Big Lake, Texas, in 1954, Al started his coaching career and took his basketball team to the state finals. While in Big Lake, he and June were blessed with a third child, Ben Wesley, in 1956. In 1959, the Green family moved to Odessa, Texas, where he taught and coached football for 19 years and was a member of the 6th and Jackson Street Church of Christ. In 1979, Al and June moved to San Angelo, Texas, where they opened Southland Frame Center and Gallery and stayed in operation for over 20 years. He also continued his involvement in sports, serving as an NCAA certified track referee at local high school and college track meets. After the couple retired, they enjoyed many camping trips to Colorado and New Mexico and made some wonderful lifelong friends in the Twin Mountain Campers group. Al was a faithful member of Johnson Street Church of Christ, where he served in various ways for 24 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Lillie Mae Green; his lovely wife, June; and his grandson, James Bradley Green. He is survived by his three children; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Alas, he is survived by many great friends and special caregiver, Oneta Scott. The family will receive friends for visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Johnson's Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Johnson Street Church of Christ with Tommy King officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers for the service will be Michael Green, Wesley Green, Jim Sargent, Chris Sargent, Andy Lima and David Barnett. Honorary pallbearers for the service will be Billy Mayes, Russell Green, Royce Green, Melvin Green, James Segrest, and Gary James. In memory of Al, and in lieu of flowers, he asked that donations be given to Rust Street Ministries of San Angelo, Texas.
