The world of sports broadcasting has lost one of its biggest fans. Judy Endicott Johnston lost her battle and passed away Saturday, September 18. Her body was racked with pain her last few years, so she was not able to enjoy the things that had given her so much pleasure in prior years.
Not your typical mother/homemaker type, Judy nevertheless cared for her daughters with unfailing love and support. For example, she always made sure they had a good balanced dinner, no matter how quickly it might have gotten to the table. From day one she made the most of the wild game meat I (Don) brought home. She would never forget the way both daughters wolfed down pureed venison stew when they were babies. Then there were the times when she bathed both girls in a dish pan in the Little Dipper trailer we had when they were growing up. We eventually sold that trailer to help finance the cabin in Weber Canyon. That’s where the girls finished “growing up,” at least till they got their drivers licenses.
Judy really enjoyed family get-togethers, camping and mushroom hunting, and of course, watching a good game on TV. She especially enjoyed time with little DyLynn, and couldn’t wait for Patty to post pictures on Facebook of her weekends with Patty and Darin.
We (Judy and Don) both enjoyed camping in the R-Pod, and the trip to Alaska was one of our lives most memorable events. We had some favorite camp spots in the Uintas. Judy’s favorite was along the Hayden Fork of the Bear River just back in the trees from a large clearing,
Few things thrilled Judy more than finding a nice bolete, and she enjoyed hunting for them. One of her great pleasures was to say hello to all her old friends and new, each year at the fall foray of the Mushroom Society of Utah.
One of the things people admired most about Judy was her spunk. She was very outspoken. She was very intense about most things in her life, but she was becoming laid back about a few. She liked going out to the patio in the waning hours of the day, and just sitting and chatting.
I am spending a few days in our old haunts; Hayden Fork, Porcupine Creek, the Uinta Mountains. Even Oakley, our puppy, seems to realize Judy is gone. I am realizing how much I really loved her, and how much I will miss her.
- Don
