James Prettyman Brittingham, 67, of Delmar passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Tidal Health in Salisbury, Maryland from complications from cardiac arrest at home. He was the son of the late Robert and Betty Brittingham of Delmar, Delaware.
James started his beginnings in Whitesville, Delaware and went to school at Gumboro Elementary and later to Millsboro High School. As a young man he often worked in the fields for a local farmer. He enlisted in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1972. He then enlisted in the National Guard where he continued to serve until 1978. After service he worked for Otis Esham in the poultry hatchery until they closed. James worked for Perdue Farms in Salisbury, Maryland for 45 years until he was physically unable.
James leaves behind his wife of 32 years, Judy; one brother, Robert Brittingham, Jr, (Debbie); three sisters, Anna Parsons, Betty Hudson (Bill), and Margaret Short; three daughters; Jamie Bennett (George), Angela Richardson (Terry), Kristy Layfield (Will); 11 Grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ellen Carey (Bruce) and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Michele Fothergill.
Although James was not responsible for bringing his daughters into this world, he took being their father seriously, always referring to them as his girls. Behind his brute facade, he was a loving caring man. The grandchildren gave him so much pleasure. He was always joking and playing with them. James loved to travel with his wife, children and grandchildren. He had a couple of hobbies: fishing and shooting guns. With Judy’s recent retirement, he was looking forward to the next chapter in his life.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 11am at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Delmar. The family asks everyone please dress casual in honor of James.
In honor of his daughter Michele the family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Women Supporting Women, 1320 Belmont Ave, Salisbury, MD 21804.
