Bob died April 16, 2021, on his tractor, at home, doing what he loved doing – working outside. Bob was born August 5, 1939 in Salem, Oregon and was raised, farming with his dad. He graduated from Serra Catholic High School in 1958. He married Carol, his wife of nearly 59 years in 1962.
Bob joined Marion County Fire District #1 as a volunteer in 1964. He later joined the Salem Fire Department in 1969 where he spent the next 25 years serving his community, retiring as an engineer. He continued in the fire service as a Chairman on the Board of Directors with MCFD#1 through 2009. On his days off from the fire department, he owned and operated Oregon Fir Originals where he manufactured custom chain saw wood carvings.
Bob had a passion for fishing, hunting and all things outdoors. He greatly enjoyed traveling and gardening with his wife, Carol. Bob was a jack of all trades and enjoyed passing on his knowledge and helping people with their projects. He was an accomplished welder and built 2 sand rails, which was a family favorite activity for years. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church Knights of Columbus, where he donated many hours of service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl (Bud) V. and Ina Hammer. He is survived by his wife Carol: Children, Brian (Cyndi) Hammer, Christine (Eric) Byler and Daryl (Stephanie) Hammer, sibling; Arleta Hammer, eight grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
