Age 97
Salem, Oregon
Patricia “Pat” Mitchell Gest, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2024 surrounded by love and cherished memories. She was 97, and she was extraordinary.
Born on September 5, 1927, in Portland, Oregon, Pat was the only child of Joseph Mitchell and Martha Pierson. She held her family legacy dearly, always proud of her Swedish and Lebanese roots.
Pat’s early years were spent in Walla Walla, Washington, where she attended elementary school. She later graduated from high school in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, before continuing her education at Whitman College.
A lifelong learner, Pat was an avid reader who would finish several books a week, just for fun. She pursued her academic interests further at Portland State University and Willamette University, where she nurtured her passion for knowledge and education.
During her school years, Pat’s love of music blossomed as she played the piano and sang in the choir. She was also a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi, where she formed beautiful friendships and lasting memories.
Although an only child, Pat embraced the blessing of motherhood with two sets of twin daughters and a son—all under the age of four. With humor, grace and an endless capacity for love, she created an unwavering bond of warmth and unconditional love.
For many years, Pat served as a pastor’s wife at Mosier Christian Church. With a small congregation, she led the choir ensuring that even a choir of six filled the church with joyful music. Pat exemplified servant leadership, lending her help and talents wherever it was needed.
While working in Hood River, Pat became involved in the Oregon School Employees Association (OSEA), an organization that would shape much of her professional life.
Her work as a secretary and teacher’s assistant in the middle and elementary schools sparked her passion for working with and advocating for classified school employees. For more than two decades, Pat represented and supported 22,000 school employees across Oregon, becoming the first elected female state president of OSEA. She retired at the age of 69, having left an indelible mark on countless lives.
Pat remained active in her community throughout her life. She held life memberships at both OSEA and South Salem Seniors, reflecting her dedication to community and her belief in service. As a proud devout Democrat and diehard Dodgers fan, she brought enthusiasm and commitment to all her passions.
In her faith journey, Pat found her forever home at the Salem First Christian Church, where she was a devoted member for over 40 years. Serving as an elder and participating in numerous church groups, Pat always sought ways to give back. In her final days, unsure what she had left to give, she gave the gift of love, making calls to church members in hopes of simply adding a moment of joy to their lives. She loved all people as she loved her God. Pat never gave up on prayer and love as the answers to life’s ups and downs. She loved, always.
Pat’s family were the loves of her life. She is survived by her children, Mari Anne Gest (husband Charles Griffin), John Gest, and Susan Latham; her grandchildren Nathan (Ryder), Jordan, Tricia, Anna, Pierson, Michael, Zady, Beau, Mallory, and Jai; and numerous beloved great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her cherished daughters Charlene, Marlene, and Dianne.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church (685 Marion Street NE, Salem, OR 97301). It will also be broadcast live on the church website. Memorial gifts may be made to First Christian Church or Willamette Vital Health (Hospice) in honor of her legacy of faith, service, and love.
Pat’s 97 years were marked by a profound dedication to her family, faith, and community. Her compassion and service touched the lives of countless individuals, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
