Anne Maddux, 90, passed peacefully on October 23, 2017, the kind of crisp, sunny autumn morning she loved. Her life was a blend of family, friends, faith, and creative activities. It began on June 24, 1927 in Berkeley, California. She was born Nadrear Anne Bowers to railroad man, Franklyn Bowers and nurse, Elizabeth Reardan Bowers. At 18, she began a twenty-year marriage with Air Force bombardier Leonard Rowe and gave birth to their only child, Janice, a year later. Anne taught herself to sew as a teenager and after marriage used that skill to make and sell frilly dresses with a friend for little girls. Later, she became an elementary school secretary. She enjoyed oil painting.
In 1965, she married high school Vice Principal Robert Maddux and became a loving step-mother to Bob’s three sons, Bobby, Donnie, and Dennis. Anne returned to her love of sewing and opened a shop called The Fabric Cottage in Chico, California. As grandchildren arrived, Anne threw herself into that role, and a generation later she welcomed great-grandchildren. Anne and Bob moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1985, and enjoyed an active life together, centered around family, friends, church, and travel.
Anne was a member of Salem Alliance Church and loved studying the Bible with a weekly study group. Her husband, Robert, preceded her in death in 2011, as did her step-sons Donnie and Dennis Maddux. She is survived by her daughter, Jan (Lou) Black, of Salem Oregon, step-son Robert (Claudia) Maddux, Jr., of San Diego, CA, and sister, Mardell (Bob) Rossi of San Leandro, California. Her grandchildren include Ken (Greta) Black, Chelene (Greg) Schafer, Jody (John) White, Jon (Marissa) Maddux, Rachel (Josh) Escalante, Jessica (Bobby) Meyer, Russell Maddux, Dora-Leigh Maddux, Eric Maddux, Justin Maddux and Ryan (Melissa) Maddux. Great-grandchildren include Maddie, Owen, and Drew Black; Jonathan, Gracie, and Abbie Schafer; Riley Temple and Allison White; Nathan and Ella Maddux; Ava, Olivia, Eliana and Caleb Escalante; and Dylan Maddux. Bonus great-grandchildren include Theresa (Yuri) Mereszczak, Tracy (Joey) Poitras, Jason (Amanda) Griffin; and bonus great-great grandchildren, Liam and Zory Mereszczak, Chase Poitras, and Caleb and Kinley Griffin.
Celebration of Life services will be Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, at 6 p.m. in the Highlands Room (207) at Broadway Commons, 1300 Broadway NE, Salem Oregon, across from Salem Alliance Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Brazilian ministry of Darrel and Jean Haworth, Baptist Mid-Missions, 7749 Webster Rd., Cleveland, OH 44130.
Arrangements under the direction of Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors, Salem, Oregon.
