Donald Leroy Jackson, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Jefferson, Oregon on September 2nd with his wife, Sally and beloved cat, Pumpkin by his side. Don, also known as Roy to many, was born in Thulelake, California to Emory and Otelia Jackson. As a young child, along with his brothers, Harlon and Norvel, the family moved to Silverton, Oregon.
Right after high school Don joined the US Army in 1959 and served time overseas. He often talked about his time in Germany and all the shenanigans he and his fellow service members engaged in. He was honorably discharged 1965. Don then went on to become a well-known and respected Operator Engineer eventually opening is own business, DJ Trenching.
From a young age Don was passionate about racing, whether as a driver or spectator. He spent many days and nights at the tracks around the area and could often be found in the pits right in all the action. Don especially enjoyed watching his son Brent engage in the same passion of racing, spending many days at the Woodburn Drag Strip. Sundays were dedicated to watching Nascar. Don also loved fishing, crabbing at the Oregon coast, hunting and traveling the US in a travel trailer with his wife Sally. They spent years exploring the beauty of National Parks, monuments and out of the way cities across the country.
Don is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sally, his children Leisa, Brent (Michelle) and stepchildren David (DeeAnn), Bill (Stephanie), Brian (Amy) and Alicia (Paul), 12 grandchildren: Chris, Shanna, William, Moriah, Brooke, Kennedy, Wyatt, Isabelle, Sarah, Maxwell, Emily & Lincoln and 2 great grandchildren Kaden & Annabelle.
He is preceded in death by his parents Emory and Otelia, his sister Wyvonne and his brothers Harlan and Norvel.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, September 12th from 1:00-4:00 pm at Virgil T. Goldens Funeral Service (605 Commercial St. SE) in Salem. A military service will be held on September 13th at 9:30am sharp at Willamette National Cemetery at 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. Happy Valley, OR 97086.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Jefferson Fire District as he lived in the area for 40 years, or to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org .
