James Morton Stavis, formerly of Hamilton and Long Beach, Rockport, President of North Coast Seafoods; died peacefully at his home in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on December 2, 2024, at the age of 72. He is survived by his wife Kate (Griffin) of 36 years; his children Betsy and her husband Nick García, and Matthew; sister-in-law Robyn Stavis and her children Barrie, Rachel Stevens and her husband Nick, and Joshua. James (Jim) was predeceased by his father, Melvin, and mother Betta (Hochberger), stepmother Helene (Rosenthal), and brother Norman. He was a graduate of North Yarmouth Academy and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Jim, along with his brother Norm, carried on their father’s legacy at the helm of North Coast Seafoods for thirty-five years, caring deeply for the company, its employees and customers as family. Jim supported many charities and causes throughout his life, including Temple Ahavat Achim, Gloucester, MA; Ben-Gurion University, Israel; Community Services of Hamilton-Wenham; The Wenham Museum; and more. To know Jimmy was to love him. He was a dedicated father and husband, loyal friend, and cousin to dozens and dozens. Nothing made Jimmy happier than to spend time with friends and family on his front porch in Gloucester, looking out over the ocean.
Services will be held at 11am on Thursday, December 5th, 2024, at Temple Ahavat Achim, 86 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA, 01930, followed by interment at Mount Jacob Cemetery, 96 Fernald Street, Gloucester, MA, 01930. Immediately following interment, condolences may be extended at a reception at The Golf Club at Turner Hill, 3 Manor House Lane, Ipswich, MA, 01938, from 2:00pm-8:00pm. Memorial observance will continue on Friday, December 6th, 2024, from 12:00 - 4:00 pm at the family residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to a charity of your choice.
