Born in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Sydell (Goldenberg) Farber. She received a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College and worked in the early 1950s as executive secretary to the publisher and editor of the Saturday Review. Later, she taught third and fifth grades in the public schools of New Rochelle, NY for almost 25 years. As an adult, she lived in New Rochelle and White Plains, NY, Delray Beach, FL and Brooksby Village in Peabody, MA. Widely read, widely traveled and with many passionate interests, she made devoted friends wherever she went. She leaves her beloved children: Jonathan Schonfeld and his wife Jonina Gorenstein Schonfeld of Lexington, MA, and Gordon Schonfeld and his wife Sally Feldman of New York City; and her cherished grandchildren, Gabriel, Noah and Michael. She was preceded in death by her beloved late husband, Gabriel Schonfeld.
A graveside funeral service for Frances will be held on Wednesday, September 5 at 2:00 p.m., at Mt Moriah Cemetery, 685 Fairview Ave., Fairview, NJ.
Shiva will be observed at the homes of her children.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Frances’s name may be made to the World Jewish Congress and the American Civil Liberties Union.
