Steve Wright, age 65, of St Johns, Florida, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours November 21, 2024 after a long four-year battle with cancer. Steve was surrounded by his loved ones in his home during his final moments, which were filled with peace.
Steve was born on November 26, 1958 in Quincy, Massachusetts to his parents, Mary and Robert Wright. A track and field star, Steve graduated from Weymouth North High School with the class of 1976. He soon pursued a career in the insurance industry, and retired after forty-three years of passionate and dedicated work for Kemper Insurance.
While his work was important, anyone who knows Steve will know that his family and friends were the most important things to him in the world. He is survived by his wife Maz (Marian), whom he met while working at Kemper. The pair were married in 1985, and have two children, Danielle (age 35) and Andrew (age 28). Despite Steve’s initial prognosis after his diagnosis in 2020, he lived to dance and smile at the marriages of both of his children (Danielle to Mike Ryan in March 2022; Andrew to Becca Clark in October 2022).
Steve was an avid Catholic and an active member of his religious community, becoming a fourth degree through the Knights of Columbus and participating in events until his illness. Steve was known by many for his sense of humor and quick wit, and his joy in making others smile and laugh. Steve was the best “Grandpaw” to his four doggie grandpups.
Steve is predeceased by his father Robert and his mother Mary. In addition to his wife and their children, he is survived by his siblings: Rick and his wife Judy of Halifax, Massachusetts; Bob and his wife Janet of Hanover, Massachusetts; Tom of Weymouth, Massachusetts; and Cathy of Brockton, Massachusetts. He additionally is loved by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family, friends who became family, and numerous amazing friends.
Steve’s favorite holiday was always Thanksgiving, and he would be overjoyed to know we are gathering this time of year to celebrate his incredible yet too-short life. The viewing will be held at Hardage-Giddens on Monday November 25, 2024 at 1285 St Johns Pkwy in St Johns between 3 and 7pm. The funeral will be held at San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church, 1718 State Rd 13 N in St Johns on Tuesday November 26, 2024 at 11am. The family would like to recognize the stand-out staff at MD Anderson for their amazing and supportive care of Steve and his family throughout his courageous fight, and of the entire team with Community Hospice who ensured not only Steve’s comfort, but the comfort of his family as well during his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to the American Cancer Society or Community Hospice.
