Was born on March 30, 1926 to Alois and Josefa Furrer in Ingenbohl, Switzerland. On August 6, 2012, she peacefully passed away in her sleep surrounded by her family. She is preceded in death by her only son, Hans Friedrich, and 5 of her siblings. She is survived by her husband, John (Hans) Friedrich; her two sisters, Ida Inderbitzen and Margrit Burki and numerous other relatives in Switzerland; her 7 daughters, Margaret Trivett, Ruth Ortiz, Kathleen Friedrich, Karleen Darr, Martha Friedrich, Mariann Friedrich and Claire Zumbach ; sons-in-law Rick Trivett, Jose Ortiz, Tim Blaine, Mike Darr, Kevin Glaser and Ernie Zumbach; 22 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and numerous other friends who called her 'Mommy' or 'Grandma'. Josephine grew up in Brunnen Switzerland with 7 siblings. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1949. Here she met and married her husband of over 60 years. In 1958, John and Josephine moved to Rio Linda to raise their family. She became a U.S. citizen in 1965. Josephine was the consummate homemaker who knitted baby blankets for the grandkids, sewed her own housedresses, baked cookies on a weekly basis, canned her own jams, jellies and preserves, and with her husband, butchered their own beef, churned their own butter, and raised fruits and vegetables in their backyard garden. Josephine will be remembered for her strength, patience, generosity, and practical advice. She held a lifelong philosophy of service to others; she always had a kind word for everyone, matched with many good deeds. She always made room at the table for visitors; she always had time for a heartfelt conversation shared over a plateful of her many homemade cookies and she always had a lap, a hug and a kiss for her grandchildren. We were all truly blessed to have been part of her amazing life. Rosary and visitation at 6 pm on Thursday, Aug. 16 and funeral mass at 10 am on Friday, Aug. 17 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 1951 North Avenue, Sacramento. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery followed by luncheon at Dante Club. Funeral arrangements by Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger, 451-7284.
