Jere Schlossberg

Jere M. Schlossberg, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on Veterans Day, November 11, 2024. During his passing, he remained deeply surrounded by the love of his family. Born on July 31, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Anne and Irving Schlossberg, Jere led a life marked by service, education, and a steadfast commitment to family and friends.

After graduating high school in 1964, Jere enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966, proudly serving his country for four years. Following his military service, he attended Sacramento State University on the G.I. Bill, earning a degree in education in 1974. Driven by a love for learning, he later pursued a Master’s in Special Education, which he completed in 1977.

Jere’s dedication to education defined his 33-year career with the Sacramento City Unified School District. Primarily teaching third, fourth, and sixth grades, he spent 26 years at Caroline Wenzel Elementary. Known for his warmth and creativity, he delighted students by teaching them to draw cartoons and wore a unique cartoon tie each day, matching the day's cartoon demonstration. His impact on students was both profound and lasting, a testament to his unwavering commitment to their growth.

In the early 1980s, Jere became one of the founding members of Temple Or Rishon, originally known as the Sunrise Jewish Congregation. Helping to establish the temple was a meaningful chapter in his life, reflecting his dedication to giving back to his community.

In his later years, Jere found joy at Eskaton in Granite Bay, where he enjoyed playing card games with friends. Jere was known for his kindness and sense of humor, he was cherished by family, friends, and his beloved cat, PJ, who highlighted his gentle and caring nature.

Jere is survived by his wife, Susan Schlossberg of Folsom; his daughter, Lisa Byrd, and her husband, David Byrd, of Folsom; his son, David Schlossberg, and his wife, Meghann Schlossberg, of San Luis Obispo; his eldest daughter, Angel Davis McDougal, and her husband, Gil McDougal, of Nampa, Idaho; as well as his treasured grandchildren and great-grandchild. His memory will live on in their hearts, honoring his selflessness, humor, and warmth.

Jere’s passing on Veterans Day holds special meaning, as it was a holiday he deeply cherished. His presence will be missed profoundly, but his spirit lives on in the lives of those he touched and in the enduring love of his family and friends.
