Doris Dillon Spangler died on Sunday, October 27, 2013, surrounded by family in her home in Sacramento, California. Just a few days shy of 91 years, Doris lived a long, full life worthy of much celebration.
Doris was born on November 2, 1922 in Fresno, California, and experienced a very happy childhood in Selma and Sanger, CA alongside her two brothers and one sister. She later went on to graduate from Samuel Merritt College of Nursing, and it was around this time that she met the greatest love of her life, which arrived in the form of a strong, handsome Marine who came and swept her off her feet. Doris began a beautiful legacy when she hitched her wagon to Robert "Bob" N. Spangler, and the couple wed on June 6, 1944. Doris and Bob were married for 58 wonderful years, and they shared a marriage that exemplified the meaning of love and service. Together they raised five children, all of whom have found their own loving partners--Jennifer (Bob) Koelewyn, Dan (Annette) Spangler, Steve (Cheryl) Spangler, Jean (Larry) Garcia, and Margaret (Don) Padilla. Doris was the matriarch of an extensive family tree that includes these five children and their spouses along with 13 grandchildren, many of whom are now married, and 22 (and 1/2!) great-grandchildren, all of whom loved, cherished, and admired her greatly. Doris is also survived by her sister-in-law, Cleora Dillon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris possessed a contagious smile and a presence that lit up a room. Throughout her life, she maintained a sweet, loving, kind-hearted disposition that gained her the trust and love of countless people over the years. She epitomized joy, and she touched innumerable lives through her love, generosity, and charitable work. Doris always gave generously of both her time and money. Not only did she use her expertise as a registered nurse to help those around her, she also supported many charities and volunteered her talents to several organizations and causes, some of which include the American Cancer Society, Cub Scouts, 4-H, the Mother's Club, A Woman's Friend, hospice care, and election polling. Doris was a woman of strong values and convictions. Possessing a true servant's heart, she ceaselessly cared and loved not only other people, but also her church. Doris remained an active and loyal member of Fairview Church in Trowbridge, California throughout her adult life.
No matter where she was or what she was doing, Doris carried with her an incredible zest for life. She was up for anything and had a great love for adventure, spending much time traveling and immersing herself in nature. She loved singing, laughing, playing games, and connecting with others in whatever ways she could. She was never one to miss out on the fun.
As the heart of the Spangler family, Doris served as a remarkable example and mentor. Her gifts of joy, love, thoughtfulness, and generosity will never be forgotten and will always reside in the hearts and lives of those she's touched. Doris truly lived every moment of her life to its fullest, and her memory and legacy bear testament to that. We do not mourn a life lost; we celebrate a life lived.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Doris Spangler will be held at Fairview Community Christian Church at 1991 Pacific Ave, Trowbridge, CA on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 12:00 with a reception to follow. On a day that would have been her 91st birthday, we not only honor the extraordinary life she's lived, but we also celebrate the new life she's just begun.
