Mr. Peter Michael Abreu Sr.

Peter Michael Abreu passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2013, at Piedmont Hospital. He was born on September 20, 1942 in Brunswick, Georgia and spent his early childhood on Sea Island with his parents, Francis L. Abreu and May P. Abreu. From them he learned to love hunting, fishing, philanthropic pursuits that help others, and how to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. Peter was educated at Admiral Farragut Naval Academy and attended Middle Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia. Following his schooling, he moved to Roswell, Georgia. He began his business career with the Zoning Department of the City of Roswell and rose to become Director of the Roswell Historic District.

Surviving Peter are his beloved wife, Carol Gaissert Abreu, three wonderful children, Peter Michael Abreu, Jr. (Michelle), Claire E. Abreu (fiancé, Jeffrey Webber), and Katherine M. Abreu, all of whom live in the Atlanta area. In addition, Peter leaves three lovely grandchildren, William Avery Abreu, Aerynne May Abreu and Grayson Michael Theodore Abreu, who were the apple of his eye. He also leaves his cherished dog, "Cricket."

Peter spent his life in the Atlanta area pursuing his primary vocation, philanthropy. At the time of his death he was Chairman of the Distribution Committee of the May P. and Francis L. Abreu Charitable Trust. This organization has supported, among others, the Atlanta Humane Society, The Woodruff Arts Center, the North Fulton Community Foundation, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, the Chattahoochee Nature Center, Bullock Hall in Roswell, the Women's Auxiliary of Piedmont Hospital and the Piedmont Hospital Foundation, the Atlanta History Center, the Shepherd Center and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. He served from time to time on the Boards of many of these institutions.

Peter was an avid quail hunter and fisherman. He was passionate about the outdoors. He and Carol traveled the world to many destinations. Most of all, he liked to garden, raise vegetables and fruits, and take care of the fields surrounding his beloved home, "Northwind," in Roswell, Georgia. He and Carol entertained any number of friends at this stately home, which was designed by his father's nephew, Henri Jova. Peter was a longtime member of the Piedmont Driving Club, the Capital City Club and the Roswell Rotary Club. This gentle and loving man, who was at home at a white tie charity ball or in his vegetable garden in khaki pants, will be missed by a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held in the Chapel at the Roswell United Methodist Church, 814 Mimosa Boulevard, Roswell, Georgia at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013. The family will greet friends and well wishers at 1:00 p.m. that day in the Parlor of the Church. Graveside services for the family will follow the church proceedings.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent in Peter's honor to the Piedmont Hospital Women's Auxiliary, the Piedmont Hospital Foundation, the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Friends of Bullock Hall or a charity of the donor's choice.
