Julie “Melinda” Newton Smith of Raleigh, NC, cherished wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend to all, passed away on Friday, July 5th, at the age of 69, surrounded by family and friends after a brief illness. Melinda was born in Atlanta, GA, on September 27, 1954.
Melinda was the beloved daughter of Charles B. and Sara M. Newton. She is survived by her husband, Roger Smith; sister, Sally Combs, and brother-in-law, Charles Combs; cousin, Mary Gaut; son, Matthew “Matt” Daniels, and his wife, Stephanie Daniels; granddaughters, Channing and Eliza Daniels; and stepchildren Kitty Miller, Charles and Meg Miller, Kevin Smith, Graham Smith, and Brian Smith.
Raised in Roswell, GA, Melinda graduated from Roswell High School where she excelled as the first-chair cellist in the orchestra and was a member of the Georgia All-State Orchestra. She attended Reinhardt College and Brown College in Georgia.
Melinda’s career included several years at Walker Florist in Roswell as the owner’s assistant, where she also obtained EMT certification. Upon moving to Raleigh, NC, in 1992, she began a rewarding career in clinical research at INC Research/Syneos, serving as a Senior Project Specialist for drug efficacy trials and preparing final documentation for FDA submission.
Her hobbies included riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles, cooking, and traveling. Melinda proudly rode her motorcycle multiple times to Sturgis, South Dakota, and participated in bike rallies across the US and tours through Europe. She was deeply involved with the Ladies of Harley, serving three times as Chapter President and actively participating in charitable events. She was currently serving as the Chapter Historian and one of the longest-serving members.
A graveside service will be held at Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell, Georgia, at 11:00 am on Monday, July 22, 2024, followed immediately by a memorial at Roswell Funeral Home.
The family will also hold a celebration of life in Raleigh, NC, on August 17, 2024; details will follow.
