Mary Hurt Witt, a beloved mother and cherished friend, passed away on December 15, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on December 13, 1942, in Decatur, GA, to the late John and Doris Hurt, Mary spent a brief part of her childhood in Chicago before returning to Atlanta. She was a true Georgia Peach.
Mary was a member of the first graduating class of Sandy Springs High School in 1960. She went on to earn her Nursing degree from Georgia Baptist, beginning a lifelong dedication to helping others through her nursing career. Mary started her professional journey in labor and delivery and later retired after 22 years with the Bartholomew Group (OB/GYN). Even in retirement, her passion for nursing remained strong. She began volunteering at her daughter's school, North Springs High School, which led to a second career as a school nurse with the Fulton County School System (North Springs High School, Ocee Elementary and Centennial High School).
A proud supporter of Atlanta sports, Mary was an avid fan of her Atlanta Falcons the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks and Georgia Force (AFL). She has been a Falcons season ticket holder since 1989, rarely missing a home game. Mary loved to travel and enjoyed many Falcons away games through the years. Two of those away games were of special note, as she enjoyed the exciting playoff victories in Minnesota (1998) and Green Bay(2002). Her presence at the Falcons games and at the tailgates with her Fanbulance Crew family always brought joy to those around her.
Her infectious smile, positive outlook, and natural ability to nurture, touched all who knew her. Whether through her work, her friendships, or her family, Mary loved helping others and brought joy wherever she went.
She is survived by her daughter, Holly Thompson; her honorary sons, Major Dunlap and Brian Whitcomb; beloved niece and nephews (Holly, David, John Edward and Ben); and a loving extended family and numerous friends who will miss her dearly.
A service to honor Mary's life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 2:00-5:00pm at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Rd, Roswell, GA 30076. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mary to the American Kidney Fund, https://www.kidneyfund.org/ Tommy Nobis Center, https://tommynobiscenter.org/donate-now/ or Atlanta Humane Society https://atlantahumane.org/
