Lois Gregson Cangelosi, aged 88, passed away on March 8, 2024, in Alpharetta, Georgia. She was born on August 8, 1935, to Charles Edward Knight Gregson and Geraldine Keller Gregson, in New York, New York.
She will be deeply missed by her son, Tom, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Anna, as well as the cousins and extended family on both sides of the family. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Carmine in May of 2021.
Lois was a beloved mother and grandmother, known for her caring and active life on Long Island, New York and in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Raised in Oceanside, New York, Lois grew up on the water, fishing and clamming with the rest of the family. Lois was an accomplished dancer at a very young age, performing with Guy Lombardo and his Orchestra at the Jones Beach Theater. Lois also loved to teach dance and opened her own dancing school immediately upon graduation from high school, where she was known for the next 40+ years as “Miss Lois.” Lois settled in East Rockaway, NY, where she married and had her son, Tom. That marriage did not last, and she met and married Carmine Cangelosi, and together they raised Tom until they both retired to Deerfield Beach, FL in 1995.
Miss Lois was incredibly invested in the young ladies that enrolled in her dance studio, with the highlight of each year being the end of year recital. She also would bring students to dance conventions in NYC, as well as the annual Macy’s Tap-O-Mania event, where her studio was part of the group that would set the world record for the largest tap-dancing line (over 6000 dancers).
Lois also became an avid tennis player, and her team of beginners advanced to a USTA national event during her first year. With that, she became hooked on tennis and played even more when she retired, finding a home at the Lighthouse Point Tennis Center, where she found a supportive group of friends. Lois missed dancing and discovered Cathy Dooley’s Original Florida Follies, a group of former dancers that performed a series of shows to raise money for local children’s charities. Lois danced with the Florida Follies for several years and became their choreographer and associate producer. She loved her time with that group of friends and being part of a performance group again.
“Nanny” was incredibly proud of all the accomplishments of her granddaughter, Anna, especially when it came to Anna’s competitive dance and the highlight of her year was attending one of Anna’s competitions or showcases.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org/) or the charity of your choice.
Lois/Nanny will be missed, but the family takes comfort knowing that she will be dancing in heaven.
