John was born in Chattanooga, TN, grew up in Charlotte, N.C where he graduated from Myers Park High School. John attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1967 with a BBA in Finance. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation. Before reporting for active duty, John was married to Judy A. West whom he met while in high school. The newlyweds were stationed at Ft. Sill, OK, where he attended the Field Artillery Office Basic School. Upon graduation, they moved to Ft. Stewart, GA where they lived for 9 months prior to being deployed to Vietnam. John served in Vietnam from June 1968 to June 1969 as an Artillery Officer, receiving the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and two Overseas Medal bars.
Upon returning home, John and Judy moved to Atlanta, GA, where he began his career with the Fulton National Bank. He attended Georgia State University on the GI Bill at night and was conferred with an MBA in Finance and Accounting in 1977. John then accepted a position with United Parcel Service as a District Controller in both the Georgia District and the Western Pennsylvania District. In 1985 He accepted a transfer to the corporate headquarters in Greenwich, CT, and then in 1991 he moved with corporate back to Atlanta, GA. Overall, John spent 25 years with UPS in various financial management positions. Before he retired in 2000, John’s latest achievement was being a founding manager of their corporate venture fund The UPS Strategic Enterprise Fund. His happiest moment while working for UPS was when the company announced their relocation of the headquarters from Greenwich to Atlanta. After retirement, John stayed active in the venture capital community as President of Brainworks Ventures, and then as an advisor to several early-stage technology companies. He also served as a judge for Notre Dame’s annual new business competition sponsored by the McCloskey School of Business.
John always had a strong faith and love for his church, which led him to become involved in the music ministry. He participated in three parish choirs and as a member of the Archdiocese Festival Chorus. He sang with the Michael O’Neal Singers, and with the John’s Creek Symphony Chorus. John was also very lucky to be part of the choir singing at the Vatican Church in Italy. John was an active volunteer and worked with Habitat for Humanity as well as in many UPS sponsored charities. He and Judy both worked as volunteers for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and they worked at several events held in the World Congress Center.
John had a passion for Golf and started playing at the age of seven. After retirement, he was very active with the senior golf association at his club as a board member. He organized many golf trips to different venues in the southeast and served with the Georgia State Golf Association as a course rater. He also served as a marshal for the PGA Tour Championship held at East Lake Golf Club.
A Mass of Christian burial for John will be held Friday, November 18, 2022 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at St. Jude The Apostle Church, 7171 Glenridge Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30328.
