John Thomas Amber

John is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Renée and John Buckingham, Leslye and Todd Schumacher, and Andrea and Brian Cueny, as well as his nine grandchildren: Lindsay Herterich (née Buckingham), Owen Herterich, Taylor Buckingham, Spencer Schumacher, Erin Swearingen, Ava Schumacher, Brooke Schumacher, Hudson Cueny, and Ella Cueny.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, John attended Hyde Park High School and the University of Illinois. As a young man, he enjoyed playing volleyball competitively along with his two brothers. And later in life, John enjoyed coaching his daughters’ athletic teams. He was a career salesman—selling everything from law books and later serving as Regional Sales Manager for an industrial pail company.

John met his beloved wife, Jean, at a cocktail party in 1962. Wanting time together away from the boring party, the two spent the evening at the front door, making partygoers take their shoes off as they entered the apartment. In his own words, Jean’s acceptance of his marriage proposal was the “greatest surprise of his life” and the “years they spent together in harmony meant the world to him.”

John’s proudest achievement was rearing three powerhouse daughters alongside Jean—each one among the top of their respective fields. But what he cherished even more than his girls’ career success, is their compassion and commitment to family above all else.

Known to his grandchildren as both Doodles and Zady, John was a dedicated grandfather, even when hundreds of miles sat between them. He instilled the importance of integrity, civic duty, and education into each grandchild. They’ll fondly remember John’s original jingles, joining him on visits to the donut shop, and his steadfast support of their individual passions.

John Thomas Amber loved deeply in his lifetime, and was fiercely loved in return.

A graveside service for John will be held Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Green Lawn Cemetery & Mausoleum, 950 Mansell Rd, Roswell, GA 30076.
