Wednesday, April 21, 2021, 8 days after her 17th birthday as a result of an accidental drug
overdose. While her death was tragic, there is much more to her story.
Clara Helen was a beautiful young lady, who, since a very early age walked to the beat of her
own drum. From the moment she was born she was always full of life, joy and one step ahead
of everyone else. As a parent she kept us on our toes.
She was tenacious, witty, smart, resourceful and would make you think. Where others thought
something could not be done, Clara found away. Such as the time she and her friend, Corinne
raised enough money for Corinne to be able to go to summer church camp in 2 days.
She enjoyed trips to the beach with her parents, loved to surf, waterski, wakeboard, and
skateboarding. She loved to play games, especially Rummikub and Progressive Rummy that
her Nana taught her. She was always the adventure seeker, and was not scared of anything,
except roller coasters. She loved to laugh and to make us laugh as well.
She was a talented artist. She won several awards and honors throughout school. She went
on mission trips with her family to Ciudad De Angeles in Cozumel. She volunteered with Meals
by Grace and The Humane Society. She was involved in Girl Scouts, dance, horseback riding,
swim team, art, band, choir and drama. She marched in the Disney Christmas Parade and the
Hollywood Christmas Parade with the GACS marching band. She loved animals. You never
knew what kind of animal she was going to sneak home. She brought home dogs, cats,
rabbits, fish, a mouse, gerbils, chameleon, and probably things we do not even know about.
Clara Helen was a Senior at Collins Hill High School in Lawrenceville. Her artwork was
selected for the 2021 Gwinnett County Tapestry Fine Arts Festival. She was enrolled in January
of this year after having attended Liberty University Online Academy for 10th and 11th grade.
Prior to that she attended Kelly Mill Elementary School, Greater Atlanta Christian School,
Vickery Creek Middle School, and Columbus Girls Academy.
Clara Helen was born in Macon, GA in 2004 and lived in Perry, GA until her family relocated to
Cumming in May of 2005. She lived in Cumming until her family relocated to Lawrenceville in
December of 2018.
She is survived by her parents, Andrew and Dionne Butler, and three brothers: Thomas, Tristan,
and Tanner; grandparents: Tom and Debra Butler, Tom Frazer, Carol McCoy; great grandmother,
Yvonne Wilbanks, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
