"A thing of beauty is a joy forever." - John Keats
"The beauty of your heart can be seen in the care you give." – Nurses quote
Susan Field Helvick was born and raised in Roseville, California and passed away on June 10, 2024 with her loving family by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jeanette and William Moran Field, and her grandparents, John and Mary Rastler. Susan is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Paul Helvick, her daughter Tracy Volkman and son-in-law Eric, granddaughter Madeline and grandson James, her daughter Amy Helvick and grandsons Noah and John, her son Brian Helvick and daughter-in-law McKenzie, her grandsons Everett, Owen, and Wesley, her brother Russell Field and sister-in-law Eileen and nephews Eric and Tyler Field, along with many loving cousins and friends.
Paul and Susan met in nursing school at Sac City College in 1975. They were married in 1977 and raised their three children in Roseville. To her family and friends, she was known as mom, nonie, Sue, Suz, and was the ever-welcoming face in the doorway, ready with a hug and kiss, and “I missed you so much” and “I’m so glad to see you.” One could not be in the presence of Susan and not feel her joy for life or her love for you. She relished her family. She loved teaching her kids and grandkids how to cook and garden. One of her favorite events was spending her summers with her kids in Lake Tahoe, a tradition that she continued with her grandkids as well. She was always the proud mom and nonie at her kids and grandkids sporting events or artistic endeavors. Susan was happiest with a crowded dinner table of family and friends sharing great food and conversation. This time spent together was what she lived for. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling with Paul. They frequented San Francisco Giants spring training and regular season games, loved visiting Hawaii, and explored Europe, frequently visiting Italy and France.
In the beginning of her career, Susan worked as a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Sacramento, California. At the encouragement of her husband, Susan left Mercy to work for Kaiser Permanente in Roseville, where she and her career blossomed. Susan held many roles within Kaiser during her 27-year career, starting as a registered nurse in Pediatrics then moving up to manage various departments, and finally as Associate Medical Group Administrator, the position she held when she retired from Kaiser in 2012. While working for Kaiser, Susan went back to school to earn her master’s degree in Hospital Administration. Susan was known for her caring demeanor and leadership. She was known for creating inclusive, hardworking, and visionary teams during her tenure along with mentoring future leaders. She treasured her work family, which she affectionately called, the dream team.
We are grateful for the exceptional care Susan received from her caregiver, Carolyn, as well as Sutter Hospice; and would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who assisted in supporting her and our family.
Susan touched many during her lifetime and leaves a legacy behind her in both her immediate family, extended Field and Rastler family in Roseville, extended Helvick family in the mid-west, and her work family.
A celebration of life and reception for Susan will be held at The Flower Farm on June 30,
2024, at 1 pm.
