She was born on April 2, 1932 in Ashley, North Dakota and was the 14th child out of 17 children of Adolf and Christina (Herr) Kramer. She was proud of the fact that the large family immigrated with a group of German Baptists, by way of Russia to the United States. The family was raised on the farm, contributing to the hard work and chores as young children. She adored her siblings more than anything and was always finding ways to get together with them over the years. Many family reunions brought siblings, cousins and growing family members back together from all over the United States.
Most of Arlene’s childhood and schooling took place in Missoula, Montana, where she graduated from high school in 1949. She headed out on an adventure with a girlfriend to Los Angeles, CA, where she started work as a secretary at Oilwell Supply Co. This is where she met and married Thomas F. Hill, and started raising a family in Covina, California.
Arlene was very involved in First Baptist Church of Covina, volunteering in the women’s missionary circles, attending Sunday School, and even working for quite a few years in the church’s business office. When Tom retired, they moved up to Sequim, WA and enjoyed thirteen years together on the Olympic Peninsula. She ended her last years in the Folsom, Citrus Heights area, next to her daughter, Valerie. During her remaining years, Arlene loved her family and her God more than anything else.
While living in Folsom, California, she met and married Milton Dick. They only had a few years together before Milton succumbed to cancer. During this marriage Arlene learned to thoroughly enjoy dancing. Arlene next married Gordon Thorsen. They had several years together before he also passed away. In both of these marriages, Arlene’s ministry became her husbands’ primary caregiving when they needed someone nearby. She cared for them with joy.
Preceding Arlene in death were her parents, Adolf and Christina Kramer, her siblings, Edwin, Emilie, Peggy, Alfred, Virginia, Leorah, Esther, Norma, Reno, Leo, Marion, Clifton, Florene, Frieda, and Ralph.
Those survived by Arlene are: Betty, her youngest sister, stepson, Patrick Hill, stepdaughter, Janet (Doug) Christianson, daughters Valerie (Richard) Benavidez, Susan (James) Sigler, grandchildren, Michael (Jordan) Benavidez, Renee (Billy) Herbert, Dana (Marshall) Christianson, Jamie (Darren) Wells, and Hayley Sigler. Great grandchildren are Sophia, Owen, Martin, Max, Lisette, Alaura, Mira, Serafina and Clara. Also, she’s leaving many nieces, nephews and friends who brought joy to her by visiting and contacting her. Arlene’s legacy continues with love for friends, family and her Lord Jesus Christ.
