Ralph Michael Purcell age 79, formerly of Atlanta and Rome Georgia, residing in Cedar Bluff, AL passed away Saturday, March 23 2024. He was born November 8, 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia and was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Purcell; mother Verna Allene Meek, wife of 43 years Carol Diane Purcell; and grandson Jared Sanders.
Survivors include his brother Jerry Lynn Purcell (Donna), children, daughters, Michelle Simmons (Chip) and Shelly Wolfe (Ronald); sons, Brian Purcell, John Purcell (Annabeth) and David Wallace; grandchildren, Sydney Simmons, Marilyn Purcell, Joshua Wallace (Danielle), Cameron Green, Andrew Wolfe, and Alicia Wolfe. Several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other extended family also.
Mickey was a Marine Corps Reserve Captain who spent years in the service of our country fighting alongside his Marines. He was an airplane and helicopter pilot and was a highly respected and beloved American warrior and hero by all those who served with him, and for whom the Marines claimed as their own.
During his military career, he fought in Vietnam and was awarded the Air Medal 1st award; Combat Action Ribbon; Meritorious Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm; Vietnamese Service Medal with 2 stars; and Vietnamese Campaign Medal with 1960.
A visitation with Military Honors will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024 from one o’clock in the afternoon until three o'clock in the afternoon at Daniel's Funeral Home in Rome, Ga. A military honors presentation will be at 13:00. A private memorial service will be held at a later date spreading his ashes.
