I, Shenequa Holston, and Cherokee County Department of Human Resources would like to give you our condolences for your loss. I am not sure if the family knows, but Mr. Purcell reached out to us wanting to help children and families at Christmas in 2022. Not only did he donate to buy our children and families gifts, we went shopping for them together. He bought activities for the families to do together and they all appreciated it. I thought it was a one-time gift, until he reached out again last year. On last year, again, we went shopping and he brought many smiles to a lot of faces. I am sad to say that we only learned of his loss when I didn't hear from him this year; curiosity got the best of me and I Googled his name. I was hoping to not find anything so I could give him a call, since his number is still taped to the bottom of my computer screen. I hate that we did not get to spend a few more years together, but I am so happy that I got to meet him. Once again, we are sorry for your loss and we are praying for your strength through this holiday season.

I was a classmate of Mickey’s at East Rome High School. I always admired Mickey as a person. Thank you Mickey for your service to our country. My prayers are with you as a family.

Michelle, Brian John, David and Shelly and grandkids, Mickey will surely be missed, my favorite memory with Mickey was when he was flying us in a small plane , I was so scared, he told me he could put the plane down just about anywhere, I looked down at alot of fields, and felt much better. He said they can't put those big planes down just anywhere but this small one , no problem!! Hugs for y'all ❤️

I’m so sorry to hear about my Marine Brother. Mickey was a member of the Jake Puryear Detachment 1020 and I worked with him at several charity events for Toys for Tots. He was a great guy and great Marine. My sincere condolences to Mickey’s family.  RIP Sir.

Mickey Purcell was a great guy, had a wonderful sense of humor and devoted to his family.  Being a combat tested US Marine placed him in whole other category.  As a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, his role required him to be the easiest target on battlefield.  His task was to fly the Marines into the field, often under heavy fire, and bring out any wounded or the bodies of any dead Marines all the while piloting one of the biggest targets on the battlefield, the old slow UH-34 Helicopter.  After completing this mission, he and his crew had to refuel and do it again, on many days, multiple times.  The lives of many Marines, especially the wounded, did not end in Viet Nam, having been plucked from the battlefield by some truly brave men of which Mickey was willing to be one.  His modesty as to what he accomplished in the face of grave danger, day after day for a year, is the surest evidence of his character.  His family and friends have the knowledge and comfort that his life was consequential.  It bears repeating, Mickey was a really great guy, a true hero!
